The Mustang should easily win against a 4.0ohv Explorer. My money would be on the Stang against a 4.0sohc as well provided the Explorer is stock.

The 3.8's are slow as dogsh*t so dont be surprised if you pull one with an X. Very very underpowered cars.

As true as that is, the 4.0ohv Explorers are extremely underpowered as well. I still say the 3.8 Mustang will win in a stock vs stock race with little trouble... given both drivers are competent. I've owned a 4.0ohv and 5.0 Explorer. My parents have owned a 4.0sohc Sport and a Sport Trac. The 4.0ohv and 5.0 Explorers that I had were much slower than my parents' vehicles. I've ridden in a 3.8 5-speed Mustang one time and I'm confident the Mustang could have easily handled both of my Explorers and perhaps even the sohc Explorers my parents had. The 4.0sohc stands the best chance of pulling out a win.

I take alot of offense to that.

The only slow 3.8's in my opinion are the pre-99's with single port intakes. 99 saw the redesign of the upper intake to a split port which netted an additional 40HP. This made the rating on a 99-03 'Stang 190HP and an '04 193 due to the fact it was a 3.9L. However the 3.9s suck as they are literally a GT's 4.6 modular hacked up.

As I own an '02 3.8L and have owned both a 4.0OHV and currently a 4.0SOHC I've seen all.

I've raced 3.8L's in both trucks and was impressed. My '98 OHV Ex outran a Cherokee from a stoplight with a 3.73 rear yet was shamed by a 3.8 'Stang (which I will openly admit was being driven by a girl). My 99 SOHC with the 4.10 rear did alot better against a 3.8 a few weeks ago in fact.

I will vote for the 3.8 house till the day I die. :salute:

I have a friend at work with a 2000 V6 Convertible Mustang. We almost always leave at the same time, and he lives right by my house. So we take the same route home. Same streets, same highway:

From 0-40
15 to 40
30 to 60
40 to 70

He hasn't even come CLOSE to beating me. He has done a K&N, and UDP. I have slightly more done to mine....

His is also a Automatic. Mine is a Manual.

I've driven a 3.8L N/A in my '91 'Bird. It was slow.. but partially due to the weight of the car. But even in a Mustang, they weren't that quick. The splitport's were better but still not that great. The 4.0L OHV wasn't that quick either. I've driven a few Explorers with OHV's and they weren't that great IMO. The SOHC's were better :)

But there's no replacement for displacement :D Stock for Stock, I think the SOHC Explorer could keep up with, and perhaps beat, a 3.8L Mustang.

I have no Idea in stock form but I can say this. The 3.8 V6 potential for "Growing" is very strong. You'd be surprised to see how far the mustang guys are pushing these motors. Much more than any 4.0 I've seen being it the OHV or the SOHC. Some of this potintial may be due to the 3.8 being around a lot longer, but never-the-less it is a respectful motor. It's a beafy well designed block and I'm talking 400-500-600 HP potential. Try that with the SOHC and you'll have some motor damage.

Regardless if you take offense to what I said I will still stand by it. The 3.8's are slow as all hell. That statement applies to not only the older 3.8 Mustang but also the newer ones before the 4.0 V6 came about in the S-197 05+ model years. Don't get me wrong, the 4.0 OHV Explorers you guys mentioned are very slow too but then again they are an SUV so not much is expected. In all honesty I do not really even consider a V6 Mustang a "real" Mustang anyways whether it be one with the 3.8 OHV or the 4.0 SOHC.

The 04's were still 3.8's. The engine changed in the 05 model year, which was released in late 04. Those have the 4.0 SOHC V6 which is near identical to the 4.0 SOHC found in the Explorers. Those are nowhere even close to being related or similar to the 4.6 V8 engine though. Not even in the same ballpark in terms of design or construction.

I'm not sure about that - A 9 second v6 mustang is very respectful to me. www.v6power.net If that's not real, I'm not sure what is. But, everyone is intitled to their own opinion.

how about a 4.0 vs. a 5.0 explorer??

4.0 SOHC will kill the 5.0 explorer. Sorry v8 dudes, you loose.

Anything can be made to go fast Jakee. I know that much better than most... The whole, "well this one guy has made a fast one" statement does little to salvage the 3.8 V6 Mustangs reputation as an underpowered crapbox. I am well aware of what some people have done to those cars. I am a big Mustanger and most of us have little to no real respect for those cars. I see the V6 cars almost as poser cars because they may have the Mustang name, but do not really have the performance that should accompany it.

There are usually 3 typical people who buy the V6 Mustang from what I have seen: Kids, women, or racers who want a rolling chassis to drop a built V8 into but still keep the V6 VIN.

5.0 wins vs. a 4.0ohv

5.0 vs. 4.0sohc is a close call...

would the v6 win because of wheight difference? in talking like about a 4.0 explorer sport the 2 door version vs. the 5.0 4 door version

Take the amount of money invested in a 9 sec V6 Mustang and put it into a V8 and see what you come out with :D

Yes - The simple fact is the 5.0 vs. 4.0 statements left out a lot of variables. If all else is equal, I think the bigger motor will win.

The deadly combination for the explorer, in my opinion, is the lighter versions (the sport is lighter so it has an advantage). That is exactly why my explorer will hang with the v8explorers, and in most cases, faster.

I can't see why anyone wouldn't respect a 9 second v6 mustang. Not just one, but many. Oh well.
