Well,
I just had to come here and tell everyone because I figure you all can appreciate this. I just got my truck back from the shop and now it is geared at 4.56! It's so nice, I went up a hill and I had power! I can accelerate! It's so cool!!!!

Now if I can just find a place where I can get Mickey Thompsons for a reasonable price I'll size up to 33s from my 32s....

Mat,
I have had similar thoughts about mine. What gears were you running before? Mine is 3.55. I am also curious about how these new gears will affect your gas mileage. Please keep us informed.

I had 3.73 before. and because of the fact that I was running 32s before regearing which ruined my mileage, regearing ahs actually improved my mileage..It's funny too, because I keep flooring it and I'm STILL getting better mileage than before.

I just stopped by my gear shop yesterday to look at getting it done... Right now I'm running 33's and 3.73's... I asked what the biggest gear I could get in the front and they told me up to 5.60 something... I was shocked I too was told before that I could only do 4.10s in the Dana 35 TTB IFS... When I went in the shop the ARB sales rep for the east coast and canada was there. Dead Link Removed I talked with him for a bit. For $2100 I can get my ring and pinion changed, an ARB in the front and a compressor... I have to set the compressor up but other than that the price is for everything installed... How's that sound??? I'm going to put another post up for ARB's... Check it out... I'll give ya the scoop there...

Hi FMNavajo,
What are you paying for the job if you don't mind me asking. I'm about 2 hours south of Sac and thinking about changing my gears also. Are you putting in lockers or L/S too?
Let me know how well a job they do, as I might use them if you give a good report.

I think the reason that some are told that 4.10 is the highest ratio avail for the Dana 35 ifs is that Dana only makes ratios to 4.10. The higher ratios 4.56- 5.13 are from other vendors which some installers may not have access to, at least this is my impression.

I too am curious about the price of installing two sets of gears. Does anyone know of a good shop in northern Ohio.

These 3:27's are getting me down.

Ron,

I had my limited slip installed by Baker's Automotive in Broadview Heights, Ohio, a few miles south of Cleveland. They were highly recommended by a friend. They're into performance, are AAA rated, and they did a great job.

Phone number is 440-526-0070. They are located on Royalton Road (Rt. 82), about 1/4 mile east of Broadview Rd.

I have a 92' Navajo and I have an appointment on 3/1 to get my front and rear gears changed to 4.56. The stock front is a Dana 35 IFS and West coast Differential has 4.56 gears in stock for my install.
I'll let ya'll know the outcome.

Hope this helps,

Tom,
Thanks for the heads-up on Baker's AAA rating. I've hauled some steel out of Strongsville on Rte. 82, so I know the area you are talking about.

Hey Mat,
Where did you wind up getting them done at? And how long did it take them?

Ray L.,
They quoted me $1300 on the phone because there is an extra/bigger pin that has to go in the rear to accommodate the gears. Out of the others that I received quotes from this was the most reasonable, they also sounded the most competent, (they were the only ones that mentioned the pin).
This price also covers the bearing kits, and all the labor. He said there are no windows so I can't watch, (I will find a way!!). I don't have much experience with gears and I wanted to learn something.

I just received my Flowmaster via UPS yesterday and I'm planning on putting in this week and take a trip to the mountains. I finished replacing the intake manifold gasket, fuel pressure regulator and o2 sensor last weekend so I want to see if the pinging has gone or not, it just pings on the hills. The last thing is the injectors themselves so if it still pings their next, ($78 via carparts.com).

I'm in fairfield so maybe we can get together and go watch those nuts on Rubicon this summer.

Currently I have 3L73 in the rear which I believe is the Trac-Loc. I will make sure I get equal or better installed. I don't do any big 4wheelin most of this work is for towing and hauling, (we take a lot of &%#% camping). The rest is for fun!

Ray -

Check out Reider Racing on the net for gears. I ordered my gears (Precision Gears) from them and had the gears installed at 4Wheel Parts Wholesalers in San Jose. The shop manager told me Precision Gears are the best and easiest to install from his experience. Everything fit perfectly. I have not had any problems with my gears (4.10) since installation. It was over three years ago.

Mat,

Just wondering if you noticed a tach reading at a certain speed before and after changing gears? In other words, what were you turning at 60 MPH before and after. With my 3.55 gears, I am turning about 2050 rpms at 60 MPH and about 3000 at 80.

Ira- Are those the tach readings while you were in overdrive?

Luke,
Yes, that was while in overdrive. I keep it in OD unless I am towing something. Otherwise, I would have to have a portable fuel transport with me to stay fueled up Dead Link Removed.

Remember that even thought you change your gears the speedo and the rpm will always read the same as stock...unles you change the speedo gear. I have 33" tires and my rpms read the same as it did when it was stock. Even though I am going 66 mph my speedo says 55mph. I have the ticket to prove that at 70 mph on the speedo I am actually going 87mph. When I put in the 4.56s it will still read the same as before, but this time my actual speed will be w/in 1-2mph of the speedo reading. If you put the gears, but do not increase the tire size your speedo will be reading faster than youare actually going. For example while youre speedo says 60mph and your tach says 2050 you are really going 50 mph and you're rpm is 2050.

Sorry if this is redundant, but the only way to change the reading is to change the speedo gear.

Hix,

This is my stock or factory gears. I have not changed them. I just wondered how much difference there was between my 3.55 and his 4.56 at the same actual speed. According to a radar gun set up here occasionally to slow down traffic, my speedo reads 60 and the gun show around 55-57.
