why would you want to do this? the auto feature is a back-up like for the 4x4, the front axle is all ways going to turn, there is no way of turning off the front axle. My .02

Thats not entirely true. Some of us have swapped in manual hubs and a BW 1354 manual t case. Some of us who remember a time before electronic t cases just prefer it the old way. I like having true 2wd and knowing for sure when I'm in 4wd, and not relying on a shift motor to do the work. I guess its a matter of personal preference.

I've got 2WD, 4 Auto, 4 High, 4 Low and 2 Low without swapping anything. Look up the brown wire mod, a switch is all it takes.

Shift motor has nothing to do with 4WD. The shift motor shifts between hi and low range.

You can take a 97XLT transfer case and swap into your truck to gain the 4wd functions of Auto/High/Low. And unplug the plug under the hood that controls your vacuum axle so that it is "live" all the time. I have done so with my 96 and same setup. Do not swap to manual hubs, its a bad investment since you have vacuum axle and the stock setup is stronger than manual hub conversion. Also once I get my 96 back from the autobody I am swapping to the ranger version of normal 2wd/4hi/4low option so will have more info on that within the next month since I have it figured out just have to put my theory to test before I do a write up.

Thats what I did on my 99 mouny. BW1354 from a 99 ranger, hence 2wd,4wd hi, and 4wd lo. And since on my 99 it was a live axle I swapped in manual hubs because of the complexity of the vacuum hub alternative. Before the swap I also had done the brown wire mod but wanted to go for the full conversion.

so the brown wire mod will give me 4hi and 4lo instead of the 4auto and 4lo?...glen...what plug under the hood?..and what does live axle mean? i just want to get rid of 4auto cause it only works when the back slips so im stuck in 4lo doing no more the 20mph i would like 4hi so it works all the time instead of limited to when the back slips.

AL I am speaking on using the E1354 since they're more plentiful. And Biggmike if you're only seeking 4high for on road driving, the easiest thing would be to perform the brown-wire-mod look it up its easy to do and you will then have 4high.

If I am understanding this correctly, I think you just want to remove the control trac system with the 4405 t-case, so you can have full time 4wdh.

95 Ex has the CAD front axle (vac disconnect), the 4405-CA control trac t-case (clutch driven), and the switch that reads...2wd-4auto-4low.

Installing a manual 1354 T-case (gear driven) will eliminate this system.

Installing a switch to the front axle vac relays (behind the pass side headlight) will allow you to control the front axle shift fork, to the on/off position. Now you can have 2wdh, 2wdl, 4wdh, 4wdl.

There is no other way of turning off the control trac system to have true full time 4wdh, that I know of.

Hey Glen, Thats exactly what I did. I installed a BW1354 electric t-case. They are pretty easy to find relatively inexpensive. I got mine from an online parts service for $250 shipping included and a 3 month warranty. However my ultimate goal is to go manual and ditch the shift motor altogether. I'm in the process of saving for a manual conversion kit. This winter has been kind of harsh here in the northeast(I guess I'm not telling you anything there in Pa.) so hopefully in the spring it will happen.
