I am having an issue with my 4wd. I have a 98 X 4.0 auto. It will switch between 4hi and 4low but when switched to auto the 4wd light turns off yet it is still stuck in 4hi. In the meantime I have pulled the front drive line to make it drivable on the street. I have searched and keep coming back to a bad shift motor. I have read the rebuild procedures, but not sure if this is the issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Justin

I am having this problem aswell, except i am stuck in 4 low and the 4 low and 4 hi lights blink while driving. help!!

I have 4wd hi and low, but wont go to auto 2wd. Help

I have a 98 4.0 manual 4x4 with a auto,4hi,4low selector switch and am having this issue as well. I have done the brown wire mod only to find that it didnt work so i placed the wire back to stock, I have tried disconnecting the battery for ten minutes to reset and didnt work, I have taken off the t-case motor and watched the motor turn beetween hi and low, but will never go into auto (2wd) I was not able to manually turn the motor to auto as well, I could only turn the cam out of the t-case to the inscribed N which I think is the auto location. Can i just run the car with the motor not attached and the cam on the t-case set to N? the other markings are H and L. I want to take the motor apart to clean it, but the phillips head bolts strip when i try to take it apart due to 130,000 miles. I have messed with the selctor switch on the dash when the car is on or off, battery connected or not, t-case motor wire attached or not, fuse in or out and still no 2wd.
What can fix this huge explorer/Borg Warner problem?

No one fixed this problem? I am no having this with mine. I was told a whole new transfer case and that it would cost $1100. But has anyone fixed this issue with theirs?

If after cutting the brown wire, the people that are stuck in 4 wheel high, the magnetic clutch in the transfer case is probably frozen, (clutch disks melted together)
Stuck in 4 wheel low could be the shift motor or a problem with the Gem

I can shift between 4 low and 4 high but when I click auto 4x4 it never disengages to 2wd. It only goes to 4 hight. I'm dropping it off at a shop today and they'll tear open my transfer case and let me know whats going on. Ill post on here in a few days the solution for everyone else to know incase it happens to them.

Well, going to need a whole new transfer case. Looks like ill just take the driveshaft out and drive it till I get me a new transfer case.

i thought auto-4h-4l the auto was basically 2wd but not true locked 2wd if it detected slip then it engaged the front wheels

Yea you're right but my transfer case wouldn't allow it to change back to 2wd. When it was taken apart, bearings were falling out. So, the shop took out my drive shaft till I buy a new transfer case.
