My truck is a 92 Ranger 4x4. I have already put a new transfer case motor on - switched to manual hubs - now all I have is 1 problem. It will now go into 4 hi, however, it will not go into 4lo. I can hear the relays clicking when it goes into 4hi but nothing in 4lo - no light - no nothing. Yes, i was sitting still with the brake pressed and in neutral (5spd.). The speedometer is currently not working. Would this have anything to do with it? Also, the new transfer case motor did not have a place to plug in 2 of the wires that were on the original one. Thanks!!:us:

I am willing to bet that those 2 wires have something to do with the low range not working.

Could be possible that you got the wrong shift motor.

Has 4x4 low ever worked? I ask because often people buy a used explorer/ranger without a manual and don't realize you can't just push the low button to work. As indicated in the following steps the speed sensor must register under 3 mph for the low button to work. There is so much torque in low range that shifting at higher speeds would break internal components.

To engage 4x4 Low you must:

  • 1st be in 4x4 high
  • Transmission in Neutral
  • Clutch depressed (manual transmission)
  • Foot on Brake (mph<3)
  • Now Press 4x4 Low
See 4x4 Troubleshooting Guide for more info.

Yes, I followed your guidelines to see if it would work. It would not. As stated earlier, I can hear the relays cliking and it does go into 4hi, however, when I do the steps you have outlined above it stays in 4hi and nothing happens. The truck belonged to my father-in-law who passed away and it was in pretty sad shape. I have spent ALOT of money on this and the speedometer and 4lo are all I have left to get working.

If you followed all the above steps then either the speedometer issue is related to the 4x4 computer not reading the speed, or the 4x4 low button is not working. Since you have a manual transmission you will also need to verify the neutral safety switch is working correctly when you hold down the clutch while pressing 4x4low.
