The 4.0L engine hold 5 quarts of oil. To be sure, put 4 in, start the engine, let it run for a few minutes, shut it off, let it cool, check the dipstick.

When changing your filter, don't forget to fill it before installing on the engine. This way, you won't have a dry start.

5 with a filter replace. that's why the Castrol 5/30 Syntec 5-qt jug is so popular around NC-Explorer town. Esp. at $16 (this week only, next week back at $18)

just saw Scott got in ahead of me

that was KMart

And do what Scott said. Nice on an Exp 'cause the filter sits strait and real easy to fill full of oil B4 you put it on.

ok, i checked the dipstick and it was between the full and low marks so i put the 5th quart in...i didnt know about that dry start stuff...i've just been puttin the filter in there and then puttin the oil in...you just fill the filter with oil b/f you screw it on? i sure wish i could find my manual...are you sposed to put 5w-30 in or 10w-30? i couldnt remember so i put some valvoline 10w-30 in there...thanks for the help

Walmart up here sells these 4.5 litre jugs of 5W30 Mobil 1 Synthetic, which is just perfect for the amount of oil my 93 four-door 4.0L engine takes.

4.5 litres is 4.7 quarts.

Here's the low down...You 4.0L engine takes 5 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil. Your engine is the same one that is in my '94 and I have the manual (though I didn't need to check it cause I have a good memory :). But I only have a good memory when it doesn't involve going to Attica, right Andre? :D ).

Hope that helps, BTW putting in 10W-30 will not hurt the engine. 10W-30 is a little thicker at startup than 5W both flow the same once the engine gets up to its normal operating temp.
