I am about to change my transmission fluid and have conflicting info in regards to how much to purchase.

How much is needed if you were only going to drop the pan, change the filter and refill?

I have the 4r70w tranny in my 2000.

Thanks

I can't say for 100% sure since I don't have that trans.. But....

On an a4ld AND 700r4 which are two completly different transmissions (ford and chevy), when I do a pan drop and replace the filter I only loose whats in the pan plus what was in the filter. For us its been between 4 and 6 quarts..

Therefore.. I doubt very much that is 14 quarts since that is about the total fluid capacity of an automatic transmission and your not emptying the torque converter when you drop the pan.

Hmm...
How much should I buy, just in case?

If you can buy it by the gallon, just grab 2 gallons.

I always buy it by the case (12 per case) and try to keep a full case or more at the house.. Sometimes its cheaper that way plus its a 30 mile round trip to the closest auto parts store, so I try to keep things like that at the house.

Yup, that sounds like a plan. I just ordered a case (12) of the Amsoil Synthetic Universal Transmission Fluid.

We'll see if that gets her done.

Thanks for the help!

the 5.0L 4r70w converter has a drain plug, with the pan and filter drop you will lose 4 quarts, draining the converter will lose another 2 quarts

6 quarts should cover the pan and converter drain, I usually buy 8 just in case, and I blow out my trans cooling system lines at the same time

good time to put a drain plug in your pan also, so you can swap out 4 more quarts in a few miles and try to use all 12 or your amsoil synth

True. It would be the perfect time to do so.
