The 4 wheel drive sometimes seems to partially engage on my 97 Ranger when I take off from a stop in 2 WD, especially when making a sharp turn at an intersection where I stop. It makes a gear whining noise that increases with speed, and I have to stop, back up a few feet, and then usually I can drive as normal.
My hubs are the autolock type. someone suggested I clean and lube them. Anyone know if that is likely to help? Will do it after finishing breakfast...

That sure sounds like a problem with the auto hubs. Adn cleaning them out sometimes helps.

Ditto. Auto-hub issues, not a transfer case or 4wd issue... Just a crappy design.
