4cyl running rough no power

My son bought a 94 ranger and has nothing but trouble since he bought it. It ran good for about first 100 miles then wouldnt go over 40mph. Continually got worse. Now wont even make it up drive way without running start. So far he has replaced fuel filter,plugs,wires and cut off catalytic converter. please help he is driving me crazy!!!! thanks
