I have a 96 ford ranger 3.0L rwd with a 4R44E transmission
hoping that one of you transmission guys are familiar and able to give
me some insight on this problem...
when first starting engine, after about 15-20 seconds
a ticking sound starts to appear ..almost sounds like a lifter tick/clack..
it starts slowly and then speeds up gradually ..
when I rev engine it does not stay consistent with rpm's but tick speeds up gradually...
when put in gear , tick is gone...
it drives and function normal, no shifting issues
after warmed up tick/click would go away in park or neutral as well..
put truck up on stands and ran it thru gears..
quiet in neutral but some times a lazy tick , in R noise
in D,1st noise
2nd No noise /quiet...
sounds like a lifter/rocker clack almost (watch youtube video), while rotating and seem to follow speed consistent to faster and slower rotation..
put back in d and applied e brake loosely so tire would only turn slowly...
went back under truck with my trusty rubber hose stuck to my ear and listen to various locations on tranny...
quiet at bell housing but more of a pronounced clacking sound
in middle of tranny approx. towards top of housing by servo pistons....

looks like transmission has to be torn apart....
i have never done a rebuild of a automatic transmission before
and feeling a little hesitant...

any ideas what is causing noise and why theres no noise when in 2nd position...????

here's a video where you can hear noise.....

update...

figured it out...
one of three retainer/keeper broke on reverse band...
not on apply/pressure servo side... soo that explains why I still have forward and reverse functioning.... but clicking sound.....
