I have a 1996 explorer with 4R55E trans. I was wondering what it will take to put in a 5R55E tranny. Is it worth the hassle? Whats the perks to the 5R55E over the 4R55E other than 5 spd instead of 4spd?

Has anyone figured this out yet?

Direct Bolt up?

Drive shaft diff?

5th gear problems?

Throw codes? If it does, how do you correct it?

Wiring harness differences?

Welcome to this forum! There are several differences such as the wiring harness, range sensor, separator plate hole location, valve body gaskets, TCC, and EPC solenoids. You could do it if you swap a few things.

Hi guys! I just did the swap myself last weekend, however I have a problem.
(the 5r55e will work as a 4r55e with only 4 gears, the only thing that needs to be replaced on the 5r55e is the neutral safety switch)

First testrun after the swap and this is what happened:
Everything seemed ok, the trany shifted fine until it was time for the tcc to lock-up.
Then my od light started flashing and it refused to enter lockup.
After this a bunch of really strange things happened.
Some examples, one time it refused to shift gears (it stayed in 1'st) and after that I could feel it slip (perhaps it somehow stayed in a higher gear and that caused the slip feeling?), and at now when I run the car it shifts really hard. Perhaps it's in limp home mode?
I have disconnected the battery several times during the testrun without any luck.

I spoke to the guy that I bought the tranny of and he asked me if there were any other lights lit on my dashboard, and there are a few. Both the engine light (wich has been lit from time to time with my old tranny aswell) and the ABS light (wich is a new problem).

Do you guys think that the ABS problem could cause my tranny not to enter lockup and the fault code (I have no reader) could cause my other problems?

The tranny hasn't been rebuilt but it's been taken apart and it has new clutch disks (not sure about that word as I am Swedish). Everything else in the tranny was good according to the seller who has a company that rebuilds trannys. He should know what he's talking about I guess...

I would really appreciate an answer as I am in desperate need of help. My car hasn't been running for 4 months now.

Thanks in advance guys!

An update,
If I press the OD buttom on the top of my shiftstick, the car will shift fine, without lockup. As soon as lockup is supposed to enter, all the strange things happen.

What I wrote in my previous post is wrong on this point. If i reset the computer, the car shifts good as long as I stay away from lockup.

Anyone ? please, I need help.

re tranny swap

Hi, I was just curious wether or not you solved the flasshing OD light problem yet? My truck is being worked on by a transmission shop and they have the same problem. But last I heard from them it seems to shift fine.Just blinks.

Still no solution. I am going to get me a new ABS sensor as the one on my front right hand side wont give me any ohms when I use a dvohm meter.
I'll update in a week or so again when the sensor is changed.

The blinking light on your car however suggests there is a shifting issue of some kind.
What does your computer say? Hook it up and check for fault codes.

Mine shifts really good all the way now, until lockup..... Are you sure your lockup is working?

The code that was registerd is P1754 which means Coast Clutch Solenoid circuit malfunction. It does shift through the gears and does enter lock up but some of the shifts seem to be off abit. Also OD seems to be working. I had it installed by a local tranny shop. They are still looking into the flashing OD light as well. Its my son's truck and he is still driving it I just hope he is not damaging the transmission by driving it while that light is coming on. Thanks for the update.

Perhaps some of the Ford-mechanic experts could step in with a few suggestions to help us? I for one really need help. Seems like Lastrock needs help aswell.
Please guys, if you can help us, don't hesitate to write!

Thanks!

I guess I should also mention that the swap I did is from a 2007 Ranger FX4 in place of a 1995 transmission. Truck is a 95.
