Here's the back story...

i have a 99-01 AWD Explorer with a bad tranny.
i also have a 95 held together with duct tape and a prayer yet has 20,000 miles on the trans.
i doubt im lucky enough the just be able to drop the 4R into the 99, but i also cant imagine that it's impossible

has any one done this particular swap? i am a mechanic just not for ford.
i would imagine i would also have to swap the pcm?

any advice would save me about 2 grand and be much appreciated.:exporange

It could be done, but some things are not the same. The valve body from the 5R is newer, and the EPC is a little different. You could either swap the entire valve body with the wiring harness, or at the very least swap the EPC. I think the TCC might be the same, but I'm not exactly sure. I know that both are modulated. The later ones have inductive signature. It's possible that the older ones might have it depending upon the year. The internal hard parts should be made a little stronger on the 5R. The clutch plate material on the 5R is designed to run with Mercon V fluid. You can't get the older Mercon anyway, so you will have to use Mercon V.
