This is my first post but I have been reading the forums for a while now.

Please help with Direct Clutch removal...

I have 97 f150 4.2 2wd. I have removed my tranny (4r70w) to hopefully fix the problem of having no 3rd or 4th gear. I have had it tested and looked at before I took it off and every shop said it needed a rebuild. So I decided to take it off myself and check it out.
Everything looks like new so far, except for the direct clutch pack that I can see, but I cant get it out of the tranny. I can see bad wear on it and even the piston above it is caked with nasty fluid that looks more worn then the other fluid.

My question is:

How do I remove the direct clutch? I have removed the tc, pump, the first batch of plates. Now it is just the shaft and the last bunch of gears left ( direct clutch) and it wont pull out. It is very loose and will move around but wont come out. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Any advice on replacing this or help with the whole rebuild would be greatly appreciated.

It does not sound like you are at the diirect clutch, which is located at the ring gear in the back end of the tranny, more like you are at the planetary support. Have you read the 4R70W Rebuild Diary yet ? It is at the top of this forum. If you have not done so already, please read it and then come back with any questions.

yes i have read the rebuild dairy. which by the way is a awesome article man. very helpful.

I have removed tc, pump, first bunch of gears and im to the point were there is a drum like with band over it (maybe od band?). I cant seem to figure out how to remove it to get to the rest of the tranny? I mentioned the direct clutch because when I look into the tranny I can see really bad gear wear in the back of the tranny which looks like the direct clutch.

So im trying to figure out how to remove the stuff so i can get to the direct clutch and replace it. it is very loose on the shaft and wiggles around but wont come loose. Do I need a special tool to remove these pars of this tranny? any help would be awesome thanks.

I am still a little confused where you are. From your description it sounds like you have removed the pump, the intermediate frictions and plates and then I am unsure what. Next out would be the reverse drum, leaving the forward clutch and the input shaft... is that out? If so, is the forward clutch out? Wait, it must be if you are down at the band....

You keep talking about the direct clutch but it sounds more like you might be at the planetary gearset... have you taken out the case support and the case snap ring?

In the 4R70W rebuild diary the beginning has a tour of the guts, match up what you have taken out against that and you should figure out where you are....and what part you are looking at. Like I said sounds like you are having troubles with the planetary gearset.
