What year is your explorer?

Well it's not an Explorer. It's an 90 F250 with Explorer 5.0, 4R70W and EFI. It was from a 98 but I modified it to use a 96 PCM to since PATS wasn't working with me. But the current tranny is 98 still

Truck has been working great for a year but I plan on using it for towing another truck to an offroad events. Having 4x4 would be nice since the truck originally had it. I'm going to regear the axles from 3.73 to 4.56 this weekend to help the 302 and adding a Truetrac just to help if I don't get 4x4

Im having trouble understanding what you are trying to accomplish. Transmission is no diffrent in AWD/4x4. But yes either of those transmissions will work just get the right converter for engine size.

Simple terms. I have a 2wd tranny swapped into athe 4wd truck. I canti find a explorer AWD tranny. Will one from a 4wd 4.2 f150 work

You can use any 4WD/AWD output shaft and housing extension to make it 4WD. If you want to also use a different transmission, just make sure it has two starter bolts. The modular bolt pattern 4R's have three starter bolts. For example the 2004 Mustang is the last 4R made with the 302 bolt pattern(two starter bolts).

You already have nearly the best version of the 4R. The 98's got the great mechanical diode, and after that only very minor upgrades happened.

The output shaft is the fist thing installed into a trans, so to swap that, the whole trans has to come apart.
