Fairly new to me 1st Gen X. 183K on the clock. Never seen the beach or any 'real' 4 wheelin. It was just locked in to get the previous yuppie owner to work in the snow.

Put it in 4WD and every once in a while I feel a bang.

Thought it was bad 'U' joints but they are all tight.
The joints by the wheels appear tight also.

Is there a week spot I should be looking at??

My thought is that maybe the Auto Hubs are popping in and out. Has anyone experienced this?

Another thought was that the Spline on the driveshaft might be shot and it keeps jumping teeth. I had that happen to my Chevy pickup.
What about the Transfer case? does this sound like a loose chain? Does this happen to transfer cases?

Just trying to figure where to look next. I hate Auto hubs, it might be an excuse to get rid of them.

Classic symton of bad auto hub/hubs, do a search on them there are some tricks to get them to work. Most people change over to manual hubs.

I hope it's that.. That's easy.

Thanks. When driving it, it's hard to tell where exactly the bang it's coming from.

Thanks. I'll do a search on the hubs.

Just a thought that might rule something out, did it happen on sharp turns?

No not specifically. Straight line.

I guess you are thinking the Knuckle 'U' joints. They seemed tight. I rolled under the car and moved the Driveshaft until the hubs locked. All 'U' joints looked tight.
Thanks for the thought
