The 4wd on my 94 xlt isn't working. The lights on the dash buttons or dash where abs and engine lights come on don't come on yet Im pretty sure I hear something engaging or trying to engage underneath the floor , any suggestions? The 4wd has probably only been used a total of 5 times in the life of the truck so this is pretty disappointing. I am going up to West Virginia in a couple weeks and was hoping to have 4wd in case of any bad roads, I'd really hate to get stuck somewhere

Check the sticky on 4wd diagnosis.

yeah I ended up finding that . Im going to check my module in the back tomorrow but what I'm not understanding is on the sticky it says there's a key on the module that you turn ? or is he referring to the actual key to start the explorer?

it must be referring to key on as in ingition power. You should be able to engage 4x4 with the engine off. youre looking for a relay click in the area where your jack is stored and the rear washer tank. then youre looking for the motor on the transfer case working, a little clunk when engaging in low seems normal. If the motor fails to engage turn your engine/turn your trans in hope to align the gears better and retest.

Ok ,I checked the module today and when I pushed the little white test button the light came on and stayed on for a long time without blinking so according to the 4x4 sticky then that means there is an issue with the actual module? Ugh I wish I had more money to put into this ride. Ill end up replacing the module and it turn out to be something else...fml

When I hit the 4x4 buttons on the dash all I hear is a click noise coming from the module, No lights on the dash come on at all. The high 4x4 button is the only button that makes the module make a sound. The low range doesn't do anything

Check the transfer case motor bushing. That seems the most common reason that the 4wd won't engage.

yeah ill have to check that this weekend . Is it hard to get off?

If your module ends up being the problem ive found that at most junkyards the 4x4 module in the rear compartment tends to usually be there.

If you don't mind working under the car you can remove the cover off the transfer case motor without removing the entire unit. Be sure to mark the cover with a pencil so you can put it back in the same location. Once you remove the cover you will see the gear and you can pull that out and examine the bushing to determine whether it has come apart. I replaced the bushing with 3/8 vinyl tubing several years ago and it has worked fine ever since (although I use 4wd infrequently).

Also included no longer 4x4. Tomorrow I will see the plug.
