Hi everyone. I have a mint '98 XLT with an SOHC 4.0 V6, and 199,000 miles. This past Friday (07-08-11), the 4WD indicator lights on the instrument panel began flashing six times. Since I invested in a new transmission last July, I didn't want anything to explode, so I took it to the best transmission shop in Akron. They said it was probably the transfer case motor, which shifts the case into the two 4WD modes, a known problem with Explorers. I tried to change to 4WD, and it wouldn't engage, so I suspect they're correct. I've found several new motors on ebay for about $125. The shop wants $300-$500 to complete the job, and they'll come in closer to $300, if I know them.
Has anyone else experienced this problem, and found a satisfactory resolution?
Thanks
John
