4wd low lost during stereo install

Hello,

I just picked up a 1994 Explorer with a lot of minor (hopefully) fix/repair issues. First will be the low range 4wd selector. The seller didn't use 4wd, so he didn't notice when he lost it. 4wd high engaged OK on the test drive. He said he was told that when installing aftermarket stereo systems it was common to cut a sending wire by mistake. Has anyone heard of this? Is there an easy (cheap) fix?

I've not heard of it before. The wires run somewhat near there but not in the same bundle as the stereo stuff. Make sure you're in neutral, stopped and in 4x4 before engaging 4 Low.

You can pull the stereo out and the 4x4 switch off to see where the wires go and see if any are cut but I kind of doubt it.
 






I've put a few stereos in Explorers. Never once encountered a wire for the 4x4 switch. I would take the dash bezel off and check the connector first.
 






In addition to being stopped and in neutral, you also need to have the brake pedal pressed to select 4x4 low. Do you hear any "clicks" from the drivers rear quarter panel when you push the 4x4 low button?
 






I've also put a few stereos in, and not only do you not come close to the 4x4 wires (which are bound up tight in tape), you don't need to cut anything unless you are too cheap for an adapter plug.
 






It's more probable that the shift motor is not operating fully. It's common to have 4hi and not be able to get into 4lo, due to how the shift motor operates.
Search for the thread on how to replace the tiny plastic bushing inside it that is most likely deteriorated.

Yup, on automatics. On manual trans, the clutch needs to be pushed in.
