Okay, I hope you guys can give me some good input on this problem as I really don't know what the problem is. I recently converted my auto hubs to warn manual, changed the spindle nuts, the whole works. Well in the process of changing I noticed the rotors were shot, so the following week I took the hubs back off and changed the pads/ rotors. Everything works great 4x4 awesome, well just this week, about 2 weeks have passed since chaninging everything, I now have a clicking noise coming from what seems to be the front tires. I can't tell if its coming from the passenger side too, but I can hear the drivers side only when I roll my window down. Its a faint clicking and the other day it sounded as though it was a dragging sound. The hubs still seem to engage fine, and seem to make the same noise engaged or non. Can anyone help me figure this out. I'm gonna take the tires and hubs off to check out the spindle nuts to make sure they are tight, but if they loosen a bit can this cause that noise? Any help would be appreciated...thanks!!!

you mentioned the spindle nut being too loose but what about being too tight...just a thought???

I know the inner one isn't too tight, and well I torqued them according to the specs ..except the specs for the outer nut say 80-130 ftlbs which could be anything in between. Also they haven't made any noise for 2 weeks until just now...so I figured if they were too tight it would have been noticeable right off the bat....guess I really don't know how these spindle nuts work with the manual hubs...do they actually lock into the hub or what is their purpose besides keeping the bearing on.

I'm too new to the ex to pass opinion on this topic...sorry

The spindle nuts are there to keep the bearing (and consequently, the rotor) on. The big mistake made when tightening the inner nut, which leads to being too tight, is to tighten it to 16 ft. lbs. Spec is 16 in lbs.

Are the hubs unlocking when in Free? If they are unlocking, then the noise isn't coming from the axleshafts and associated components.

if they were too tight could they squeak a little when the hub is engaged but not when free??

How tight is 16 in lbs? Hand tight?

for the spindle nuts if i remeber correctly, it was something like hand tighten it, then torque it to 20 ft pounds then back it off 1/4 turn... seems odd, but that was the right way to do it, then the outer one got tightened to 150 ft pounds....

I know how to do it, I just wonder if I got em too tight. Oh well, tommorow.

Forgot about that original site.
