2004 Explorer Sport Trac
I have a 2004, 4WD Sport Trac. I am the original owner. For the last year or so, everytime I want to engage the 4wd, I have to unplug the two plugs that go into the module. Plugging them back in, and sometimes applying some diaelectic grease always works. Is this a common problem? Am I looking at replacing the module and wiring along with the plugs that lead to the module for a permanent solution? Any ideas would be apreciated, greatly.

Fairly common problem but I wouldn't think you have to do it regularly, especially after applying the di-grease. Are all of the pins in the connector locked tight in the connector?

They seem to be, as there is a clicking sound when plugged in. It will engage atleast once after plugging back in, so it seems t be plugged in well. Recently, it would not engage on a very cold morning. After driving with the heater on for an hour or so, I tried it and it engaged. Pretty puzzling. Has anyone ever tied spraying canned air to maybe clean the contact points? I've seen this used on computers.

You may have a bad solder joint on the board since it works once or after the heater was on a while and the vehicle got warm. Those problems are difficult to diagnose.

Would changing the moduel correct this? I hate to star replacing parts in hopes of fixing the problem.

Other wise, this is a great truck, never missed an oil change, garage kept, one owner, 4wd works great, when it works.

Check all of the connections first, including the one at the shift motor on the T-case.

Will do, is the shift motor connected to the xfer case
