4WD Noise When Turning

I have a 97 4.0L UK spec it drives fine in 4WD Auto mode and fine in a straight line in 4WD high but when you try to turn at low speed the rear wheels seem to lockup and if you persist in turning the car moves but you get a juddering from the rear and somtimes a banging, In low range you get the same not as bad but when changing back to 4WD auto a loud clunk is heard. I am thinking it is a diff or transfer box problem. Can anyone help and is this a repair that I can perform. Thanks for any help offered.

You're right....the newer ones don't have hubs. You aren't running the 4x4 on dry land are you???? If you are....stop. You'll mess up a ton of stuff. Are you???

If this is on pavement, then that is the way it will react, just before you break a bunch of expensive parts! When you put it in 4x4 High/Low you are locking the front and rear driveshafts together. When you turn your front wheels need to be able to turn at a different speed than your rear tires. When you are in 4x4 High/Low, the only way for them to turn at different speeds is by your tires slipping or something breaking to releave the built up tension. If you are on a low traction surface, your tires will easily slip. If you are on pavement, they don't slip easily enough. I do get a clunk when coming out of 4x4 Low. Coming out of 4x4 High isn't noticeable.
