I just acquired a 1993 Explorer with 4WD and a 5 speed manual transmission. My problem is that when I push the button on the dashboad to engage the 4WD, nothing happens.... no light, no noise, just nothing. Please excuse my ignorance but my question is: Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to look or how to begin to diagnose the problem? I checked the fuse in the power distribution box under the hood and it seemed fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is exactly what I have...first thing to check is the module in the rear of the car (inside the driver side panel). There are two wire harnesses attached to it, unhook both and press the button on the bottom. What happens next will tell you what is wrong. If the LED blinks, its the electric transfer motor. If the LED stays lit, its the module.

Most people get a clicking noise or blinking lights but I get nothing. My LED was blinking when I did this diagnostic so this weekend I am taking the motor off and cleaning it (as per Dr. Bob's instructions).

Power at switch ?

Check to see if you have power at the switch, also if you just purchased the vehicle, did they change the radio? Your switch could be disconnected, It's hard to line everything up and get your hand between the dash and bazel when reinstalling it, they might have just left it undone or not connected it good. If you have power at the switch, its time to get dirty and check the transfer.. No power there and it's in the wireing. It's all electrical, find the break in the curcuit.

Kanewolf: Had my '94 XLT for a few years now, and just recently got the same problem. No lights, no click/thunk, no 4wd. :(
Found this out just in time for our first snow storm (only 12inches) so playing beat the clock to get this problem solved also. Keep us posted on your progress, I will do the same (if the wife will ever let me go play in her garage). Onto to Dr. Bob's site!!

Who is this Dr. Bob? And where is his site?
