Hi there,
I have a 93 Ford Explorer and when i engage the 4 wheel drive and make a sharp turn (like when parking) it lurches forward and makes a loud banging noise.

At this point im just disengaging the 4wd when i park, but I'm curious what might be wrong, and how much you guys think it should cost to fix?

Thanks

That is what it is supposed to do. That is what 4wd does.

I don't think its supposed to do this. It's only when i have the wheel turned all the way one direction and its a continuous BANG! BANG! BANG! as i roll forward. Otherwise the 4wd works fine, just not when the wheels are turned to the extremes.

When your turning the inside wheel will turn faster than the wheel on the outside.

yeh, those auto hubs wont disengage fully till you back up about 10 feet, so even if its disengages its takes a little while for them to totally disengage

sounds like you might have a prob with your u-joints
