i have a 96 explorer and the 4 wheel drive is currently not working. the last snow we got i put it in 4wd and the light came on but i could tell it was not working. is there anything i should be looking for( loose vac line) or should i just take it to a dealer

vac lines have nothing to do with 4wd. i would take it in. its probably something wrong with the transfer case.

It is possible the vacuum line came disconnected from the Center Axle Disconnect (CAD) do the tests on here to check its functions no need to take it to the dealer if you can put it up in the air.

On a '96, yes they do.

Visit the transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials forum on this site, and read through the '2nd gen 4wd troubleshooting' thread (orsomething like that, I think... Having a brain fart) stickied at the top of the section. Start there and report back. :)

ok. took it in to the shop and replaced the pass side hub and bearing and checked the vac lines, 4wd was not working while it was on the lift before the replacement. after replacement 4wd works. all i did was the replacement and checked the vac lines at the transfer case to the pass front end, no breaks or cracks, did not know that a worn out bearing could mess the 4wd up. just thought i would post this
