Okay, ive got an 00 Explorer sport. It has the full time automatic 4wd, but whenever it kicks in (and it does it often) sometimes it bangs a little hard and jerks the truck a bit. Any ideas on what this could be and how it could be fixed?
Thanks
Jerzey

Also, is there a way to disable the automatic 4wd so that it stays in 2wd when switched to auto?

you can do one of two things
you can do the brown wire mod use the search there are many threads on it
or you can do what i did and replace the tcase it cost me just shy of 2000 for parts and install.

My "clunk" ended up being the transfer case in my situation. Picked up a used one from Midwest Mustang for about $300 delivered, another $300 to install at the Ford Dealership-$600 total. A new one would have cost me $2k installed.

Take it to a transmission shop or a Ford Dealership--they can diagnosis it.

Ill check out the brown wire mod, but it only clunks when its in auto and switching into 4w or out of it. Its not all the time, its just once in a while?
