DISCLAIMER: I DID NOT USE A REPAIR GUIDE NOR AM I IN ANY WAY A CERTIFIED MECHAINIC. THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I just replaced my Shift Motor on my 93 Sport Transfer case with 100% success. I ordered the part from EBay from a store called Direct Automotive; it was much cheaper than from Ford and was shipped to my door. I ran the ex up on ramps and quickly unbolted the 4 bolts holding the motor. The one tricky part was the three wires that went to the Transfer case from the motor wire harness. Two wires go to what I think is the sensor to find the position of the case (4WH, 4WL, 2WH) and the third brown wire goes directly to the transfer case (I'm not sure what it does). The trick is to look in the center of the plug and see the doughnut shaped red (it was red in my truck) holder that prevents the individual wires from being removed from the plug. I used a dentist tool to pluck it out (SAVE IT, DON'T damage it) and then use a small flat screw driver to pry back the clip holding the wire (only a millimeter or so) then pull the wires out from the back, REMEMBER WHICH COLOR WENT WHERE. If in doubt check the other side of the plug (the truck side). Bolt the new motor in place torquing it evenly don't forget the metal bracket it not only holds the wire firmly in place it keeps the sensor lodged in the case housing. Then place the wires back in the new plug and replace the red doughnut piece. Clip the plug together and secure it to the metal bracket.
I tested mine out immediately and it went in and out of 4wd and I was set.
