4x4 and Low not engaging?

Hey i tried searching for this but couldnt find it. im sure its here somewhere but i could use some help. On my 92 x i cant shift into 4wd. if its quiet i can hear a clicking sound. could it be the transfer case? but do i need a new one? it sparatically works so that why i think i dont need a brand new one. let me know. thanks
