Rear Slipping?

The PCM (computer) uses the signals generated by the ABS sensors in both front and rear differentials, to determine whether power should be sent to the front wheels, in addition to the rear. It "looks" for a speed difference between front and rear; if such difference appears, it quickly engages a clutch electronically to allow power to be sent to the front axles.

Therefore, the transfer case is "working" all the time, so to speak, but only sending power to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions. This is different from "All-Wheel Drive", in which power is sent to both front and rear all the time, using a "viscous clutch", like a torque converter, which mechanically ties the front and rear driveshafts together. imp
