i have a 2002 ford explorer 4.0 4wd. have been recently having issues past few days mostly, 4x4 high light blinks approx 5 or 6 times per minute. in the past the 4x4 low would randomly engage (not sure if cause tire size or wear an whatever) but any way i was thinking 4x4 CM just because the 4x4 high has been acting up as well. anyway i was wondering if there was anyway to attempt trouble shooting it first? i have the Cm unplugged right now already checked all fuses. . and also if the unplug trouble shoot does not work can i drive with the CM unplugged to prevent 4x4 engaging?

you can unplug the 4x4 fuses both in the engine compartment and under the dash to keep the 4x4 from engaging.

Do you not recommend unplugging the CM? And just pulling the fuses?

i have a 2003 exp. about 6 months ago mine at about 45mph all of a sudden would start going in and out of 4wd and i would have to slow down to about 15 to get it to stop. i wasn't sure what was causing it, so i decided to just unplug the 4wd control module under glove box. i drove it like that for a few days without any problems. i finally figured out that it started doing that to me right after i had a flat and put spare tire on back. it was a new tire and all of the others were pretty bald. i got 4 new tires and plugged it back in and it is still working fine
