I was just given a 95' Explorer automatic with the 4.0L and 145k on it. Took it out to play in the mud and found out that the 4wd wouldnt engage. The 4wd and 4lo lights come on momentarily when i start it like they should. When i select 4auto or lo nothing happens. No lights and it doesnt sound like its trying to engage. It doesnt matter if im driving, stopped, in park, neutral, reverse, whatever. I checked the fuses and they are fine. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of where to look next. Anything will help. Thanks!!

The vacuum disconnect may be bad if the 4WD light doesn't come on when you put it in 4 Auto. You also won't hear anything from the t-case when you turn the switch to 4 auto.

You have to be in neutral with the brakes on to shift to low. You will hear a noise from the t-case as it shifts to low if its working right.

I'd start by checking the vacuum lines.
