:us:Hey All,
New guy here, just bought himself a 92 Ford Explorer 4x4 5-spd Manual. Got some questions already. First off, it has electric selectors for 4x4 or low range but do not currently work. Where should I start as far as diagnosing the problem? Next what is the deal with automatic 4x4 hubs on the front? Good or Bad?:exp:

The most common issue with the 4x4 electric shift is the shift motor. They need to get rebuild, especially if they are never used. There is a shift motor rebuild thread on here which will show you how to rebuild it.

As for the auto hubs, for stock work, they at least "work". For oversized tires, or real wheeling, they are ditched early on. They don't let you control what is going on, break and are expensive to replace. A manual hub conversion is < $200 and you know when they are engaged, and are stronger.

Hey Mark,
Thanks for the pointers. Took the shift motor apart and just like it was mentioned, bushing was in many pieces. Cleaned it up and replace it with a piece of 1/4" in vaccum hose and now I'm out four wheelin. Thanks to all those who put together this forum.
