4x4 for 1998 explorer sport not working right

i just bought suv and 4x4 is not working right when i put it in i dont hear anything and when i step on the gas in chatters alot and it never did this before i was wondering if anyone else has has this problem any suggestions would be great thanx

i did that and found out my trasefer case is not locking and now not sure what to do anyhelp would be great thanx

i jacked it up and spun the drive shft and it turns then it said to start it and put it in 4x4hi and i did then i tryed to spin the front drive shft and it spun so now it says the trasefercase is not locking but when i drive it it seems like it wants to engage but it just chatters or feels like it jumps abit and it never did that before anyhelp would be great thanx

check out transfercase oil condition but it sure points to a TC clutch problem
Is your TC a 4405?

Well first off, never engage 4wd on dry pavement (I should have said that in my 1st reply).

Its kind of hard to diagnose problems just based on noises so I guess I would remove the driveshaft and see if that changes anything. And while the driveshaft is out, check the front driveshaft's yoke for any "play".
