One reason the computer does this is in response to faulty ABS signals. When that happens, 4WD is disabled, as well as speed control. When the 4X4 HIGH starts flashing, try engaging the speed control. If iut does not indicate ON, check for ABS codes. Must have a CAN Protocol capable code reader. It happened to me. Took a mighty long time to figure out, after several bouts of "Forced Engine Idle". imp
EDIT: Note, ONE reason.......there may be others, for sure.
Check all your tires to make sure the tread wear is even. I presume all 4 tires on yours are same make and size? If your tread is starting to wear and one set front vs rear is drastically different then the 4x4 will try to compensate
