4x4 high & low light not coming on

Hi All, I have a 2002 Explorer. The 4x4 high & low light is not coming on and not engaging. A mechanic stated that Auto 4x4 is working (but not had any conditions to check it out). I go off roading in the desert and need the 4WD.
