Ok so I just got this explorer... aside from the fuel leak issue which I will be taking care of soon. I just tried the 4x4 out to see if it works and no go... when I push the switch on the dash the lights dim and there is a drop in power and the battery indicator shows a power drain. Then it comes back up to normal but no 4x4... the lights don't even turn on at the 4x4 switch. I read the sticky post about the 4x4 motor and figure I will give that a try. Any other ideas as to what may be causing the 4x4 issue?

Thanks,
BlackRain.

My guess would be that the transfer case motor is seized. Electric motors draw the most amount of current when they are stopped. If it is seized, it will draw a ton of current (hence the dimming lights) until the control box gives up and stops trying.

First step: give the transfer case motor case a gentle tap while trying to shift into 4x4.

Second step: Take it off and rebuild it. There are a couple really good tutorial threads on here describing how to do it, one with very good pictures.

4x4 problems

Ok I will give that a try and see what happens.
