Okay guys here I go....BTW,I did lots of searches and they were helpful in troubleshooting some issues,I have a 1992 Explorer,4x4,4.0,5-speed,it has a 3" body lift with 33x12.50 tires on it,I just got the truck at a steal and I'm very new to Ford anything, well this is my first, but not my first project...
I had to put a starter on it to make it run so I didnt know if it run or if anything worked.....so The 4wd doesn't work..I did the check of the switch listed for the DB and the WLB wires and they would pass 12v when the switch was pressed...I hear no clicking/relay noise at all
:I have checked all fuses also that i could find(under hood and under dash)
:I have done the 4wd module check and the LED flashed 4 times
:I put 12v to the 4x4 shift motor wires at the 4x4 module and didnt hear any activation at all..
:so at that point I removed the shift motor and manually put the transfer case in 4 low to be sure that it worked at all,and it did..the hubs locked in and the 4wd worked perfect..so now I need to figure out the electrical issue Im having..
::my question is where the heck do I start now?will the motor being bad keep the relays from clicking or anything lighting up
::Thanks in advance for the help.....

I believe you're going to have to replace your motor. Do you have a Pull-a-part nearby? If so then you can get a "new" shift motor for about 15 bucks. They say it's a wiper motor, and who am I to argue?

Sounds like the shift motor is bad. You did confirm that the motor is getting power when the button is pushed? If it is the motor is bad.

i did not have anyone to press the button while I was under the truck, that part I wasn't able to do...I had assumed that the relays would have still "clicked"..does the motor being bad make all of the system go down?
Thats what I'm trying to understand,I hope thats all it is because even if I have to purchase a new one I still won't have alot of money in the ride...
I have seen the motor rebulid sticky on here,Is that an option I would have?

Thank you guys for helping me out,I promise to help out with whatever I can when I can,Dave

Ha,your right it does look like a wiper motor...I didnt think about that,we don't want them to know it come off a transfer case...that would jack the price on up there right.....
I have one probably 50mi away, but I'll have to see if they have one before I make the drive ya know...Thank you for the help

That looks like the right one. just make sure the plug is the right shape and has the right number of wires. O and yes a bad shift motor can make everything stop working. I bought an aftermarket one a couple of months ago for a similar price and it works great fixed all my problems.

Thank you,I'm going to go ahead and pick it up and try it to see if thats it..Then its off to fix the sloppy shifter and the lifter tick under the hood....

okay well I ordered my xfer case motor today,I pray thats all thats wrong with the 4wd,I think I'm gonna have to repin the plug with a couple wires according to the description...anyone know what thats about?

they are probably talking about the brown wire that runs into your transfer case. when you unplug the old motor the plug will will have one wire that runs into the transfer case. you have to take the plug apart pull the brown wire out and then take the new plug apart and put the brown wire in. I am guessing that is what they are talking about. there should be a red piece in the old plug pull that out out with a hooked paperclip or pliers and the plug should come apart.

okay guys I put the new motor on and the 4wd works like a top!!!!!! :)
Thank you for all your help...repinning the plug was simple and it was 3 wires but the brown was one......I'm pretty happy, now I will post in another Thread to try and get that pesky tick under the hood gone.
again thank you all!

the tick I would start by checking the exaust manifold gaskets and manifold to pipe connections.

its a lifter issue....im trying the sea foam and mmo trick before I dive into the engine...

okay so after further digging...It was a rocker arm issue.there were 3 rockers on the driver side that the pushrods were about to punch thru...I don't know why except maybe just steal pushrods on alum. rockers for so many miles,I went to my local junkyard and picked up 2 loaded rocker shafts and the pushrods and valve covers for a whopping $20...fixed it...now its quiet as a mouse taking a leak on cotton....pardon my analogy but it made a world of differance in power and everything, now for the miss and I can start driving her everyday, well as soon as I get rid of those huge tires.....I'v got 33x12.50 maxxis big horns almost new if anyone wants to trade some 31x10.50 or 11's for them....

It might be missing because you installed used internals instead of pulling the heads and having them repaired. It also may be missing because one of the heads is cracked. I would do a compression check. That wont be completely accurite as to wether its bad rings or a leaky head but its a start. I know that these 4.0 heads have a nasty history of cracking. Once they do, you'll never get it to run right.
At least its running better tho eh?
