Could that be because I used regular bearing grease on my auto hubs when I repacked the bearings? I'll look them over this weekend perhaps and see what the problem is. When I hit the switch all I hear is the click and that's it. I had no problems with the hubs before. If cleaning and some oil will not help I might have to go with the manual ones. I wanted to switch anyway but could not find the manual ones. Where and which ones are up now. Does WARN still make them? Milemaker perhaps? Any ideas before I even consider?

Thanks,
:D

Actually there is a technical article on this site about the installation of these hubs (Warn). It also includes the appropriate part numbers. About the 4x4, it should still engage and light up. It sounds like a control module problem. I have to hit my a few times, and after a few clicks (behind the rear left seat in the panel) it engages. Hope this helps.

Ohhhh?

Even if it is a mechanical or electrical problem I hope to have it fixed by the Attica run otherwise, ....... well, I don't even want to think about it.

still the same...

and it did work after repacking. It's just lately that it doesn't work after I put a new set of wheels. I'm changing the wheels again and hope to resolve the problem this weekend. Nothing happens when I switch it to on except for a click somewhere in the rear compartment, like in the computer "room". When I switch it off though I get windig sound from somewhere down underneath the truck. Sound goes with the speed of the truck. When I accelarate it's up and when I slow down it goes down as well. It looks to me like the wheels hubs don't lock. It might be that I put too much grease when I repacked. Anyway, I'll check it this weekend and will post the findings.

:D

When you determine what the problem is, please tell me. I am curious as to what caused this. 4x4 worked before the repacking? Hope you get it running.

What year is your explorer? If it is a 93 or 94, I am looking for a set of broken auto hubs to experiment on. I'm trying to come up with a method to hold them in the locked position. If anyone has a pair they would like to donate, please email me at OliverH750@msn.com

Thanks,

4x4 not engaging

I would try to clean them again and just put oil in it. An article at Explorer maintenance site: Dead Link Removed , say so. No bearing grease but atf oil. Go read the article, it's really interesting.

done.

I've done it. Cleaned the entire thing and lubed with ATF. I have to take it off though to see if it works. Will keep you all posted.

no good

Well, I went off the hard surface to test the performance of my auto hubs and it looks like I have a problem. Sounds like they lock OK when I hit the switch but after stopping, backing up and then going forward again I hear ratcheting sound and after a few meters they lock again. I mean I can hear them lock - click. I repeated this and it sounds to me like they lock and unlock for some reason. I tried going up hill and only the rear was spinning so here I know front does not work. The thing that aggrevates me the most is that ratcheting sound. What the hell that is. Did I do something wrong when I put these back together? Could there be something I can do? I'm definately going to put manual hubs on my truck but first I need to know if this sounds like them. Sounds like the hubs to me.....

HELP!!!
:D

Andre, That sounds like worn out auto hubs to me. I just went through this on my explorer. What's happening is the cam that engages the hub is worn down to the point where it no longer completely engages the splines. The sound is the sound of your engagement splines clicking over each other. You have to disengage by changeing direction. Back up in 4wd on a dirt road an spin the tire a little. Then put it in 2WD and drive forward, the sound should be gone. That's what worked for me.

I was able to fix the auto hubs on my '94. I took them apart, and found that the cam piece was worn down about 1/8". I took it to a machinist and had him turn a bushing out of brass to fit where the worn away material was. I put them back together and they worked again. The machine work cost me $30/hub and should last quite a while. Now the 91-92 auto hubs are different, and I have no idea how to repair them, but since your's is a 94 this should work. Also, if you decide to go to with manual hubs, I would be interested in your broken hub(s). I'm trying to come up with a way to manually lock them while still allowing them to work automatically. Good luck.

Got manual hubs.

If this is what you are telling me it is then I should be fine because I went and ordered manual hubs. I'm putting these on my truck tomorrow so I'll let you know what happens. If it works you can have my auto hubs and play with them. It shouldn't be much problem to lock 'em in ON position, but then I might be wrong. I'll let you know.

Got it.

I installed manual hubs today. So far so good. I'll test the setup in Attica for sure.

Let me know if you want the automatic hubs for "testing".

workes!

Done some serious wheeling Saturday and the hubs and everything worked great!! Had a ball!

Later.

Does anyone know anything about the electronic shift module? I have a 93 EB and my 4wd stop responding completely, no sound no lights when I push the button. I've checked the connection between the dash and the module, it's OK. The module has an LED and a push button on it, anybody knows what it does? Thanks.
