4x4 not working, and I don't know how to use the diagnostic light in the back.

My 4x4 Explorer is not kicking into 4 wheel drive, the light doesn't try to come on or anything. It is one of those you push the button on the dash. Someone said there is a little red light in the back drivers side jack compartment that can tell you whats wrong with your truck. I found it but don't know how to use it, can anyone tell me how. Thanks.
