I have recently tried to engage the 4x4 on my 2002 xlt with no respons:scratch:e. The lights that used to flash when this system was going into 4x4 won't even come on. I realize it must be 1 of 3 things. The switch in the dash, the 4x4 control module (behind the glove box), or the switch motor down near the transfer case. Does anyone have any input on this? Could there be a fuse associated to this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty good with a wrench so I'm going to attempt a repair on my own. Thanks again.

I'm no expert, but usually when something goes wrong with the 4WD system, the 4WD light would flash, but since nothing is happening, i would check the fuse.

Fuses?

Does anyone know which fuses would be associated with the switches on the dash? I had already checked the fuses labeled 4x4, etc. according to the owners manual.

Hi. My 2002 Limited is in the shop right now for the exact same problem. I will post the outcome as soon as I get the truck back. I can tell you that they spent about two hours checking voltage readings on everything and came to the conclusion that it was the modulator. They however are not a Ford dealer. I was forced to take it to this particular shop due to the terms of the extended warranty (don't get me started on THAT).

I have the same problem as of yesterday. Tried to put my 2002 XLT in 4 wheel high to go through snow and it wouldn't switch over. Wasn't a pleasant drive to work. Sounds like the 02's have a fault somewhere.

I got mine back from the shop yesterday and the result was that the control module was bad. $300.00 plus around $100.00 labor. Nothing covered by the after market warranty the dealer had sold me as it doesn't cover electrical parts.

The odd part is that when the module goes bad, it will not set any sort of trouble code. Seems like it should since everything else does.

I just wish I had discovered this forum earlier as removing the glove compartment and switching out the module seems like a rather easy task. What gets me is that this same shop just finished re-building the transmission a week ago. I know that the 4 wheel drive and the dash lights worked fine before I had this work done, yet they tell me the two are not related. I guess thats possible as these modules seem to be troublesome in this model year from what I have read here, but it still seems rather strange to me.

Good luck with yours.
