4x4 Not working

Hello All! Posting this for a friend. He has a 94 X sport. He says the 4wd is not working. The light on the selector switch turns on but there is no noise and the 4wd is inop. We live in WI and were able to positively see the front wheels where not engaging. Any thoughts on wherer to start to find the problem would be appreciated!!!

It might be your shift motor there is a whole break down of it on a forum. you should check it out.
