I have a 1993 explorer the 4wd worked when the person I got it from bought it till about a week before I got it given to me. (sister in law so I do know it was working until then since I drove it alot) it has the 4x4 & low range buttons on dash they do not light up at all when pressed. I am trying to figure out where to start for diagnosis I did check fuse in block under hood and that's it. more info on vehicle below

Do a forum search; the most common cause is that the transfer case shift motor's stop bushing has deteriorated and fallen apart. You can find threads detailing how to take the shift motor apart (it's easy) and replace the bushing. While the motor is off you can manually shift the transfer case to verify that it is mechanically functional in all modes. Another possibilility is the 4WD module in the rear cargo area, but start with the shift motor as it is easier to diagnose in my opinion and you can rule that out.
