If I had to guess, I'd be inclined to guess the shift motor before the switch.

98% of the time it's the shift motor.

Read this thread for a fix.

Pay attention to the portion talking about the plastic bump stop. Replace the broken plastic with a small piece of vacuum tubing - I think 1/4" tube will fit over the screw.

Thanks guys...i'll check it out!

I need to do this too. I was thinking to try to find a replacement motor instead of doing the rebuild.

I found this at Rockauto.com for about 80 bucks

DORMAN Part # 600800 {#E8TZ7G360CA, F9TZ7G360AA, YL2Z7G360B} Fits Borg Warner 1354 Transfer Case / Plug Configuration: Round Plug w/7 Pins

Advanced auto also has them for less than 80 dollars.

I think the explorers have the 1350BW, not the 1354BW.

Can I drive the vehicle with this motor removed? I was thinking to remove it and try a rebuild on the motor , but wasnt sure if I would finish it the same day.

Yes you can drive with the shift motor removed.
