I just bought a used SPort Trac. Everything works great but the 4 wheel drive. I've got the high light to come on a few times but it is very inconsistent. In park I turned the knob and listened to it. It clicks repeatedly but doesn't seem to engage and the light doesn't come on. Any idea what this might be or what I need to check. Thanks for your help.

It actually clicks about a dozen times then stops clicking.

4X4. Clicking but will not engage.

Clicks 12 times and then stops. Does this mean it's the motor? Just bought it and would like to get the 4x4 going if it can be done so affordably. Thanks for any help.

More than likely its the shift motor. Sounds like the module is commanding the shift motor to move but the motor isnt listening lol. Sometimes you can tap on the motor while somebody is in the cab toggling the swicth, like how you would to get a sticky starter workin. Good luck and welcome to the site!

So I'm assuming a motor repair is much more costly and labour intensive. Is this correct?

You can do the shift motor swap in your driveway/ street with regular tools, don't pay someone to do it. Do a quick search in this forum and in the stock 95-01 explorer forum and there's threads about the repair.

Thanks for the help. It does engage once in a blue moon. Does that still indicate motor issues?

Do the disconnect/reconnect a few times on the module to be sure there isn't oxidation built up on a contact keeping it from engaging. Most electrical issues are bad connections ....... I'll send you the diagnosis from the manual if you're up on electrical systems.

The repair wouldn't be a bad job to do in the driveway. I almost did it to mine but it turned out to be the switch in the dash causing my problems. (It wasn't doing exactly what yours is doing.)
You can get a new shift motor for around $70 or so though.
