4x4 question

I have a 98 sport sohc and I have a problem with 4low not disengaging. It will shift into 4 high and out without a problem and also into 4 low but it is very hard to disengage 4 low. I tried going forward a little and reverse a little then putting it in neutral but it still wouldnt disengage. I finally tried putting it in neutral and putting the switch to 4auto and then turning the truck off and on and it disengaged. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what the problem could be.

to get out of 4low you have to come to a complete stop..put the truck in neutral....and then turn the switch to 4hi or 4auto....and tehn wait for the lights on the dash ot go out, and you may hear some clunking sounds....are you doing this?

yes I am in neutral with foot on the brake at a complete stop and when i move the switch from 4low to 4high or auto it does nothing.

sounds like a shift motor problem, try cleaning it or tapping it with a hammer while someone turns the switch....there is a tread around here on how to clean it.
