I have a 97 explorer sport with control trac 4 wheel drive. I like the 4X4 and all, but the fact that the 4 wheel engages when the rear wheels slip (expecially on snow) This kind of annoys me. It sort of takes the fun out of winter driving. I know the control trac is probibly a good (SAFETY) thing to have, but i like regular 4 wheel better, With a switch that has 3 selections (off, 4 high, & 4 low) Control trac has (auto, 4 high, and 4 low)

If anyone knows how i could easily switch the control trac to regular 4 wheel easily, i would be greatful. Im not talking swapping my control trac system out for standard 4 wheel, but if there is an easy way to switch between the two, by pulling out a fuse or something easy like that would be great!

There is an easy mod so you have 2-hi mode. It's called the "brown wire" 2wd mod, you should be able to find it using the search feature.

and you also get 2wd low

thanks guys for all your help.

another 4wd question...

Now that there has finally been a reasonable amount of snow where I live with more to come, can any of the gurus out there offer a tip or two to on using my 4wd?

Like HRSPWR, I also have a 97 with control trac, but have the full size rather than the sport model. Never had 4wd in any of my previous rides, so I don't want to make a mistake that will end up being a major blowup/repair job. Anything would be helpful as I can't seem to locate the little booklet about it that came with the owner's manual and all that jazz. Things such as general tips about using it, perhaps when not to use it, how to check and make sure it is in proper working condition and how to take care of it, and so on and so on.

thanks!!!
