2001 Sport Trac 4x4
Ok, let my son and daughter use my Sport Trac, 2001 auto 4x4, Daughter was driving and she says she did not put it into 4hi. But the truck is stuck in 4hi. There are no lights on in the dash (4x4high: 4x4lo: or OD off) nor are they flashing.I had to pull the front shaft to get it home.
I thought the problem was the 4x4 CM. I reinstalled the front drive shaft, and pulled the 4x4 CM the truck still will not come out of 4 wheel drive. I then pulled the shift motor, I can turn the shift rod, going into the case, by hand with no resistance. All I can feel is the weight of the rod. And it stops at the 4x4 position and turns to 4lo with effort. Also the dash switch works, push 4hi and the light lights up, same with 4lo and the case shifts to 4lo. Because of this I think the problem is in the transfer case. ohhh the fun. Would like another opinion on this diagnoses.

Thanks Tbars
I'll see if their temp. fix works. Should tell me if the problem is in the CM of not. I'm still thinking the case itself though, cause of the shift shaft turning so easily from 2h to 4h. hahaha the fun begins!

Well tried the f150 forum reset, NO joy still in 4x4high. guess I'm back to the shift shaft in the transfer case.

Does anyone know how much effort it takes to move the shift shaft from 2h to 4hi by hand?

Good info to have thanks TBars, I think i'll be pulling the T-case next week if not sooner. I'll let you know how it comes out.

I'll have to send Ken a pm thanks again

What I found when I opened the Transfer case: Picture #1 is the pump; #2 is what's left of the chain follower; #3 is the 2h to 4h shift fork; #4 is the input shaft.

I think the pump froze

......That definitely looks like way to many parts...Would it be cheaper to find one at the junk yard???

ohhhhhhh yea much cheaper just ordered one for 175 with only 72000 miles on it. I'll open it up to see how it looks before going in. Do you know if the gasket between the T-case and the trans is a must, or will silicone work?

...If it were me, if it comes with a gasket stock, it gets a gasket..:D

yep I agree just trying to avoid going to the stealers ship one more time.

Hey how's the 4x pup??

..You might try contacting RockAutoAshley on here as she is the vendor rep for Rockauto.com ...I'm not sure if they carry the gasket or not, but it's worth the try..

...As for the 4x pup...She is getting up there in age and she loads up everyday with the same excitement...I took the X out last weekend and went camping...She was ecstatic to say the least..:bounce:...As long as she can get her head out the window, and her nose to the air, all is good in her world...:D
