I haven't been able to get my 4x4 to work for months now and took it to my shop but they couldn't fix it because it seemed to be a computer issue. Went to ford (which I always hate) and they said I need a new PCM because that's where the 4x4 control is on this vehicle is. Kicker is that it's $1900. I have a 2004 explorer xlt v6. Just seems like too much. Have checked fuses and small stuff. All are fine. Any insight would be great. It's almost snow season in VA and I want to fix it ASAP. Just don't wanna drop 2 g bars on it. Thanks.

That's extremely high IMO. Best bet would be to go to a local junkyard and find a replacement. I believe the 4x4 module is located behind the glove box and I don't remember if you need to have certain #'s match or not.

Only the '02 and '03 have a serviceable 4x4 module behind the glove box. In '04 when ford went to the fly by wire throttle setup, they changed the pcm and integrated the 4x4 module. I work as a tech at a Ford dealer, that amount seems extremely high for a PCM replacement. IMHO
