Hey folks
When I turn to the right I hear almost a slipping sound coming from the front when I take off slow to normal (going straight) I hear the slipping sound, at first I thought it was the transmission slipping but when I punch it grabs fine and takes off no slipping sound? A freind said it had something to do with the auto 4X4. I am just trying to determen if this is a serious issue I should have checked out or if it is a normal thing, I have a 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer with 4.6ltr, I have never owned a vehicle with auto 4X4 and have only owned one 4X4 (98 F150)
Thanks in advance

slipping sound? Like from the tire squeeling or from the CV joint going clunk clunk clunk?

Only when turning? Only right?
Or going straight as well?

Does your truck have a 4x4 switch? (I am newish to the 3rd gen explorer's)

OK revisited one more time, I am narrowing this down here are the symptoms
1st the noise or slipping sound is coming fromt he drivers side front
I notice it only when taking off slow to normal or under a load(like on an incline)and when turning to the left
It sounds/feels like the AWD is either trying to engage or not disengaging
I put in 4X4 high and did NOT hear or feel anything (it went away)
Putting it back in 4X4 auto the slipping/sound came back
My best way to describe it is that it is either not engaging properly or it is slipping while trying to engage and is greatly exaggerated when turning to the left
I know i am starting to sound like a broken record, but I really do appriciate the help and patience!

oh and no clunk clunk sounds just as something is not seating properly and causing a slipping sound/feel

bump help anyone lol

i know you guys are there

yeayeah.

Its interesting that this "slipping" feeling goes away when you put the vehicle in 4HI because, though its not recommended on dry pavement, the vehicle should be "slipping" if 4WD is engaged and your making a moderate turn on dry pavement.

? I called the dealership that I bought it from today they said the would cover the cost of any repairs needed so I am taking it to a transmision place tommorow I swear it's almost as if something on the front driver side isnt engaging very strange however I will post there findings tomorrow evening when i get it back from them.

oh and thanks for the reply

sounds good, keep us posted.

There is no such thing with something not engaging on the front driver side...there is no hub or anything to engage. The only slip that occures in the drivetrain is in the transfer case. Sorry I can't help you on your rub noise, except to tell you that it isn't normal. my 02 4x4 V8 makes no noise in either mode.

Well I dropped it off at Transmision place today the did a test run and heard the "noise/slipping" but told me it would be tomorrow before he would have anything for me, the "slipping" is just the best way I can describe what I am feeling/hearing, and yes it could be something in the transfer case, I dont know, the ironic thing is we are supposed to get rain sleet and snow tonight LOL ( and now I dont have a 4x4 ) I guess I will just have to call in sick tomorrow lol. I will post again tomorrow to let you know what the deal is

Hi, I hope you get it back soon with an good answer. Though my Ex is -96 it could help me too. I also can hear the same sound I think. To me it sound more like an old brake shoe which is just about to lock up. Noise goes away when I switch from 4WD Auto to 2WD. Another symptom is: When I drive straight ahaead on snow (4WD Auto on) and floor it a bit, also front start digging and I can hear a new sound. This sound is like: popping 50 times/minute noise level is low. I think it could be magnetic clutch. GEM has set code once; both lights six times. So after all this all could be speed sensor related.
This does not happen always and my 4x4 Low is fine.

OK I talked to the Transmision shop he said that the noise I am hearing is normal and there is nothing wrong with my truck .......other than a wheel bearing that sounds a little bad "little bad" lol but it did not warrant replacement at this time, he also said he put the ex through a series of test and everything worked normal . I didnt have time to go pick it up today so I told him I would talk with him tomorrow. Now this is a reputable place (Cottman Transmision) however the dealership told me to go there, so I think for my piece of mind I will take it to another place just to make sure they come up with the same thing.
