Has anyone heard or run this exhaust setup from explorer express.com??

5.0 V8 – 2 1/4" tailpipe – rear exit – stainless steel tip

I just ordered a cold air intake and a chip will be soon...need to get my gas mpg up and more power...

Any feedback would be great...thanks

For that much money, and it saying barely louder than stock, no friggen way. 2 1/4 piping on single out for a 5.0 is a little restrictive.

I'd say you'd be better off going with duals on the 5.0, you already have a Mustang so I'm just taking a guess that you like the sound to be aggressive. Magnalfow and Flowmaster are the best ways to go for that. All the others are too quiet and don't sound as throaty or menacing for the 5.0, but that's IMO.

Theres another company that I'm looking into also called CGS, and their mufflers sound very mean and nice.

to be honest with ya i would go with the gibson 3" cat back. i just put one on my 5.0 and it sounds mint. it cost me like 250 and like 40 bucks to put on ( i dont feel like lying under my truck when its 30 out). nice aggresive sound when u stomp on it but sounds perfect at cruising speeds

that can't be the right kit. those pipes are too small. you need to go three inch if its single or 2.25 maybe 2.5 with duals

Thats what I was thinking, why are they using the same piping for the ohv V6 on the 5.0? That 2 1/4 piping has got to be why they say it's barely louder than stock.

I thought 2.25 looked goofy too thats why i posted it....my stang is true-dual X-pipe'd 2.5 from mac headers back....

I'd love to have my eddie sound like my stang but its used for business and everyday driving....I'm a Realtor and I always have people in the X.....I'd like something a little more Deep and loud but nothing that's loud or has a drone inside....I love my 5.0 with headers/xpipe/flowmasters but sometimes ya get sick of hearing 90% exhaust 5% cranked up stereo and 5% of people screaming to have a conversation at 65-70 :)

but i'd like something a bit more "beefy" and better mpg....that gibson setup sounds like what i'm looking for...better flowing....how much louder is it in sound?.....is it a bolt on application?...I can do everything myself..I just don't have a welder......whats gibsons site where i can order this exhaust?

ok I found 2 catback kits at only 289! thats perfect....there is 2 kits...which one do i want for the easyest bolt on?

or

'97-'00 5.0L Explorer 4 Door - 4WD - Dual Inlet-Welded 3 Bolt Flange

Thanks guys

it depends on which setup u have. look at the section of pipe right behind your last two converters, it should either be a slip flange, or a bolted flange, whichever you have, thats what you buy.

u can get it cheaper through performancecenter.com. thats where i got mine. and if u call and order it usually you can geta deal on shipping.

I would recommend the Gibson also. I have the stainless verion which I got from www.truckperformance.com and installed it in about an hour. The fit and finish are excellent utilizing the factory hangars. When I first installed I thought it was a bit too quiet but as the exhaust "broke in" the sound became deeper and more pronounced. It's perfect now, a deep tone that's not too loud on the freeway, perfect IMHO for the Explorer which I use for business also.

Look at that Bassani cat-back.
yummy
I have a Borla cat-back on my Mustang and it sounds awesome but my first choice for the Mounty would be the Bassani.
Realistically, though, I'll probably end up with the Gibson. Anyone using the aluminized version? Any long-term problems? I'm not around road-salt around here.

Lou.

i would go with flowmaster cat- back exhaust, i have the the flowmaster 50 series suv system. you could buy the 50 series suv muffler and go to a muffler shop and have custon pipes made. only con about dual exhaust is you will have to remove the spare tire in order to get the dual exhaust out by the bumper.:D

if you would like picture just e-mail me!!!

2-1/4 is too restrictive? thats what size the stocker is..

I have dual 2-1/4s on my 5.0 flow50s.. the catback was about $300.. no performance changes, no proof that there were any gains.. but damn does it sound better. no mileage changes either unfortunatley.. I think the only way to get better mileage is to granny it.

I have duals and my spare tire is still under there. Click the link in my sig and take a look around. There are pics in there showing how the pipes are run.

Darkfox, dont you still have the spare undernieth?

yes... um

if I would have done it again.. I wouldn't have ran my other pipe to the driver side.. its really not worth hte look... I'm at a stage in life where I'd rather have a loud aggresive exhaust from a system you can't see the exists of.. but when I got my system I wanted 1 on each side.

I have some pics on an msn community, I'll get the url

ok try this link

The stock exhaust is supposed to be restricitve, they have to meet noise levels, which is why Ford used 2 1/4 inch piping and a bunch of cats.

Your not getting anything (gains mileage ect ect) because your using 2 1/4 inch piping for duals. On a 5.0 (Explorer or Mustang) you need at least dual 2.5 inch piping to exhaust the gasses faster, dual 2 1/4 is better suited to the ohv and sohc V6. All the guys where I live that have duals on their 5.0 Explorers are running at least 2.5 inch pipes and some have 3" pipes - do that and you'll see the gains and mileage improvement. Your really holding back the 5.0 by having 2 1/4 inch piping, guys with duals on the sohc or ohv use that.

Again your truck is just fugged up man, 0-60 in 10-16 seconds? Our 5.0 Mounty will run to 60 in 8 seconds flat and go through the quarter at 16.2. As for mileage, I'm constantly on the gas and accelerate from lights at around 3000rpm or more, and I get 15-16mpg in the city and 20-22 on highway at 75-85mph.

You also emailed me your problems and I brought them to the dealer, they have no idea as they have never had a Mountaineer or Mustang have your problems, and said that your dealer or wherever you get it serviced most likely did something to screw with it b/c your said you remember it being better when you 1st got it.

Your slower than a Geo and an Excursion gets better mileage than you, that right there should tell you somethings definitley wrong. Sorry Bro:)

just saw your exhausts setup darkfox, are you sure you have 2 1/4 piping, your tips are small as hell, they look like their 2", again every person I know with duals on a 5.0 has at least 2.5 inch piping and 3" or 3 1/2" tips. I think the shop slapped on some very small piping;)

thanks for doing that for me, really appreciate it.

I gave up.. I went to I think like 3 or 4 places having it looked at, spent more than $200 in diagnostics.. exluding the dyno run.. had it floor dynod.. nothing came back.. I guess I'm just weird.

well I've been wanting a stainless steel exhaust system with invisible tips (that is.. it exits so you can't see em on the passenger side, nice n loud) to get 2.5s you gotta change out the heads cats.. the whole 9 yards.. otherwise you may as well keep the 2-1/4" pipes.

I dont have the 2k or so for an exhaust system right now, and thats not really a priority anyway until I get like a supercharger. which may or may not happen.. MAYBE IF GAMESTOP WOULD CALL ME ON THAT JOB APP I PUT IN!! ahem.. that has nothing to do with this.. but I'm just going to assume there is nothing wrong with the truck.. and do any mods that I would normally plan to do.

yep.. 2" pipes..

2inch.jpg

btw nitrous.. you may wanna look into a gibson setup.. with a flowmaster muffler instead.. I've heard most people say gibson isn't loud enough.. I love my flows sound

yeh, those are very small meaning you probably even have 2" pipes in their. When you had your exhaust done did you tell them what piping ect. ect. to use? Or did you just say "I want dual exhaust"? That could be one of your problems right there, as those pipes are way to small to be running on a 5.0 and your really restricting it, you definitley need at least 2.5 inch piping or 3" if you want it really loud.

also if when ever you want to change it too be really loud, hehe, just get the Flowmaster 1 chambers (race series) and have them dump it, you scare the crap outta anyone near you or probably even yourself when you first start it up;)

EDIT - yeh, Gibson is way to quiet, two friends had Gibso cat-backs on a V8 Tundra and V8 F-150, you could barley tell their was an custom exhaust on. Flowmaster and Magnaflow are really the only way to go, IMO Borlas are not worth the price and they have a buzzy sound to them that sounds a little ricey, another friend finnaly took his Borlas off his Sport and slapped on some magnaflows - which I was suprised to hear how good they sound on the sohc V6, any of you guys wanting an exhaust for the sohc look into Magnaflow, very distinct sound on the v6.
