Hey Y'all,

I was wondering about a few cheap/easy mods for the Exploder 5.0. Would the cobra 1.7 roller rockers work? Are they worth it? Also, what about porting and polishing the cylinder heads? Does that do anything useful? What exactly does it do? Sorry for all the questions, just a little mechanically uninclined.

Porting and polishing the cylinder heads is a method used by racers to gain better air flow cacteristics (sp?) out of the intake and exhaust passages. Basically they take a grinding burr and remove as much excess material as possible (without cutting into water jackets or oil passages) to increase the size of the passage. Then they take sanding drums and polish all the rough surfaces to allow the air flow to move as easily as possible through the passages. This modification is not necessary on a stock motor and can actually hurt the engine performance. Minior deburring and polishing the exhaust is about all that you should do to a stock motor, but any gains in power are so minimal you'd never notice.
 






Dual exhaust, pulleys, cold air intake. I bet the roller rockers would work but they might not clear the stock valve covers. if you try them let us know.
 






The heads are definitely the weak point on your motor. In recent history ford has put pretty consistently poor performing heads on all 302's. mrboyle is right that ports that are too big can kill a motors performance but it is impossible to remove enough material from the stock heads to make them flow enough to do this. The intake that you have on the other hand is a pretty good stock peice. I would do some of the typical mods that 5.0 mustang owners do. Headers, hi flow H-pipe and exhaust, K&N air filter or other cold air intake w/high flow filter. Underdrive pulleys.

The 1.7 rockers will be a good mod as the exploder 302 has an even milder cam than the 5.0HO stang motors. The single biggest gain you could make would be a good set of aftermarket heads....My $.02
 






I thought the GT40P's were good heads. Aren't they supposed to flow about the same as the regular GT40's that the stangers use?
 






I am also interested in mods for the 5.0...when I'm searching on the internet for parts most of what I find will be specific to the Cobra 5.0. Will all these mustang 5.0 parts be compatible with my 5.0? If not what ones will and what won't? And what about stupid little stuff like the oil cap? This may be a stupid question...but I'd like to know and stop wondering. Thanks!
 






there is no point to swaping in the cobra motor because it comes with similar heads and intake. so it is not worth the money and time for no power gain. the p heads have a revised spark plug which is where they are suposed to make more power out of. you will how ever pic up power from the because the stock one is so small allthought the cobra one is also small because they used 1.72 rockers on those cars you are better off getting a small wolverine cam with Canefeild heads and a edlbroke intake that would be a big big improvment over the stock setup. there is no resone to exchange one apple for another when what you want is a water mellon.
 






I have read through some posts and I am looking to get some more power out of my 5.0. According to claims I should be able to get an extra 60hp or so and 75 lb ft of torque by putting in a chip, K&N Fipk or KKM, and a 3" gibson exhaust. Does anyone have these mods? If so how effective were they?
 






i have a variation of those mods, pp 3, 3 inch exhaust, and k an d fipk. and no my truck doesn't make 275 hp. but they have made a big difference. to me the were well worth the money
where in minneapolis? like do you live there are or a suburb. i used to live in edina. now my parents live in red wing, and i'm in school
